By starting any procurement process a worldwide process is initiated with far-reaching consequences. By taking responsibility as purchasing party for these consequences, it becomes clear that insight in that process is necessary and that you understand the need to obtain that insight. Only then you can make fair choices and secure that the preservation of the heritage of the planet and the way we deal with all the people in the supply chain is done/will be done properly.

The focus is on the procurement process itself and on the product/project. Within a circular procurement process each product can be purchased ‘circular’, regardless of whether it is a circular product. However, a non-circular product will never become circular by just buying it ‘circular’.

The effects of the procurement process is divisible into three parts: the supply chain prior to the procurement (pre-consumer), the period of use itself (consumer) and the reutilization chain after the use (post-consumer). The organization that initiates the procurement process party gains insight into all three parts and only makes the most circular decisions based on that complete information.

The result of circular procurement is the combination of the product/project and the procurement process.

Circular result = proces x product

A circular procurement process of a non-circular product/project = not circular.

A circular product/project purchased within a non-circular procurement process = not circular.

Any action to achieve a circular procurement process is good! Any action to make the product/project circular is good! However, until both are fully circular, the result will never be "semi-circular" but non-circular. Semi-circular does not exist, and is in fact a euphemism for 'circular' actions where ‘linear’ remains ‘linear’, with or without extending the linearity.

This means that it’s virtually impossible to achieve a circular result, which currently is our reality. This is good news! It is precisely this awareness that will be the driving force that is required to start/continue the transition towards circularity.
